New · Doctor-Led Treatment
Scalp muscle relaxation is a doctor-led, non-surgical approach that may be considered as an adjunctive treatment for selected patients with hair loss. At The Hair Office in London, treatment is personally assessed and performed by Dr Anju Mehta, and only recommended following a full medical assessment.
Emerging research suggests that excessive tension in the muscles surrounding the scalp may contribute to an unfavourable environment for susceptible hair follicles. Reducing this tension may help support the local scalp environment, including microcirculation and oxygen delivery around viable follicles.
This is not a standalone cure for hair loss. Treatment is considered as part of a wider, personalised hair-restoration plan following appropriate assessment and diagnosis.

The muscles around the front, sides and back of the head help anchor the scalp and can influence tension across the tissues covering the scalp.
Where clinically appropriate, prescription treatment may be used to gently relax selected muscles surrounding the scalp.
Treatment is focused on the muscles influencing scalp tension rather than simply treating the areas where thinning is visible.
This approach may be considered in selected patients with pattern hair loss where active, viable hair follicles remain.
Before treatment, we assess your pattern of hair loss, scalp health and follicular activity to determine whether it is appropriate for you.
It cannot restore hair where follicles have been permanently lost or replaced by scarring.
Individual responses vary. Patients may notice:
Hair changes occur gradually and should be assessed over several months rather than immediately. Hair regrowth cannot be guaranteed.
Your hair-loss history, pattern of thinning, scalp health and follicular activity are assessed before any treatment is recommended.
The treatment areas are identified and prepared. Comfort measures can be used where required.
A series of carefully placed injections are administered to selected muscles around the scalp according to your individual assessment.
There is generally minimal downtime, and most patients can return to normal daily activities the same day. Specific aftercare instructions will be provided.
The muscle-relaxing effect develops progressively, with the treatment generally established over approximately two weeks.
Any improvement in shedding, hair calibre or density occurs much more gradually because of the natural hair-growth cycle.
For suitable patients, treatment is generally repeated approximately every 4–6 months, depending on individual response and the wider hair-restoration programme.
It may be used alongside other treatments where clinically appropriate rather than as an isolated treatment.
Treatment is generally well tolerated and usually takes less than 30 minutes to perform.
There is typically minimal downtime, although temporary redness, tenderness, swelling or bruising around injection sites can occur.
Most patients can return to their usual activities the same day, with individual aftercare guidance provided following treatment.
Hair loss is rarely caused by a single factor. Scalp muscle relaxation may therefore form one part of a broader treatment programme. Depending on your diagnosis, this may include:
Our aim is to identify and address the underlying contributors to hair loss, rather than relying on one treatment alone.

Every patient undergoes an individual medical assessment before treatment.
Dr Anju Mehta personally assesses and performs the procedure, ensuring that treatment is based on appropriate diagnosis, patient selection, clinical evidence and realistic expectations.
Where prescription treatment is being considered, its suitability, benefits, limitations and potential risks will be discussed during your medical consultation.
