Genetic Hair Loss Test
Genetic Hair Loss Test
Stop Guessing, Start Treating: Genetic Hair Loss Testing at The Hair Office, London
A genetic hair loss test gives us something that many treatment plans miss: a better understanding of why your hair loss is occurring and how your body may respond to different treatment options.

Before recommending treatment at The Hair Office in Battersea, we may use genetic testing to help us understand the factors contributing to your hair loss and to personalise your management plan.
Many patients come to us having already invested in shampoos, supplements or treatments that produced little benefit. Often, the issue is not the treatment itself it is that no one has first assessed whether it was the most appropriate treatment for that individual.
What the TrichoTest is
A Trichotest is a genetic test developed specifically for hair loss. Developed by Fagron, it analyses genetic variations associated with hair growth, hair loss and the way individuals may respond to commonly used hair restoration treatments.
One of the reasons this is valuable is that two people with very similar patterns of hair loss may respond quite differently to the same treatment.
Minoxidil is a good example. Some patients respond extremely well, while others experience little benefit. Genetic variation may partly explain these differences. A Trichotest helps us understand this before treatment begins, allowing us to make more informed recommendations rather than relying on trial and error.
The assessment combines analysis of relevant genetic variations with a detailed questionnaire covering your medical history, medications, lifestyle and other factors known to influence hair health.
Genes do not tell the whole story. Hair loss is influenced by both inherited and environmental factors, which is why the genetic results are always interpreted alongside your wider clinical assessment.
What Happens on the day of my Trichotest?
- Which treatment options may be more suitable for your genetic profile.
- Which treatments may be less likely to provide meaningful benefit.
- How your individual genetic profile may influence response to certain therapies.
- Your inherited predisposition to common forms of hair loss.

What Happens on the Day of my Tricho Test?
The assessment is straightforward and completely non-invasive.
- You complete a detailed questionnaire covering your medical history, medications and lifestyle.
- A simple swab is taken from the inside of your cheek.
- Your sample is sent to the laboratory for genetic analysis.
- Once your report is available, we review the results with you and explain what they mean in the context of your hair loss.
Because your genetic profile does not change, this assessment only needs to be performed once.
Why the Test Is Only Part of the Picture
A genetic report provides valuable information, but it should never be interpreted in isolation.
Your results are reviewed by Dr Anju Mehta and Kelly Morrell, who combine the findings with your medical history, scalp assessment, trichoscopy and, where appropriate, other investigations such as blood testing to develop a personalised management plan.
Depending on your individual results, this may include regenerative treatments such as PRP, Polynucleotides Calecim AHS or polynucleotides, medical therapies where clinically appropriate, nutritional recommendations or other evidence-based treatment options.
The value of genetic testing lies not simply in generating a report, but in using that information to make better-informed treatment decisions.
Who Should Consider Genetic Hair Loss Testing?
Genetic testing may be particularly valuable for patients who have previously tried treatments without achieving the results they hoped for, or for those who wish to take a more personalised approach before starting treatment.
It may also be appropriate for patients with a family history of hair loss who wish to better understand their inherited predisposition and discuss strategies for preserving hair health.
The Trichotest may provide useful information in patients with common causes of hair loss, including androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata and telogen effluvium, although the suitability of testing will always be discussed during your consultation.

Fantastic I had a consultation at the hair office with Dr Mehta and Kelly Morrell. The atmosphere was really relaxed they put my mind at rest about the treatment which was only mildly uncomfortable and relatively pain free . The treatment administered by Kelly took approximately twenty minutes. The results exceeded my expectations, within 6 weeks I could see changes in my hair which has continued to improve after my second treatment . I wholeheartedly recommend them.
