SMP Treatment examples
At the Hair Office in Battersea, you will find the Best Scalp Micropigmentation in London that is carried out by our 14-year-experienced specialist Kelly Morrell.
For men, Scalp Micropigmentation is an ideal way to achieve the look of a full head of hair that has been shaved by choice. For women, Scalp Micropigmentation can provide the look of a fuller head of hair without the need to shave the hair.
Each hair loss concern is unique. Often, hair transplants are not always needed or suitable. Scalp Micropigmentation is a realistic alternative to a hair transplant. For someone unsuitable for a hair transplant this treatment can be genuinely life-changing.
What is Scalp Micropigmentation?
SMP, sometimes called a hair tattoo, places hundreds or thousands of tiny dots of medical grade pigment into the scalp to simulate the look of real hair follicles. This gives the convincing appearance of a closely shaved head of hair. For thinning hair, it can give the appearance of a fuller head of hair, with a greater density. Each dot is matched to your skin and hair tone and blends like a natural follicle among the ones you already have.
SMP is not the same as conventional tattooing. The process uses a medical grade ink, different equipment and requires specialist training. The ink sits much shallower in the scalp, and is designed to fade lighter over the years. Results lasting 5 – 7 years on average, with good aftercare, and some needing a refresh or top up after 2 – 5 years depending on lifestyle and sun exposure.
What SMP can do for you
Recreate a natural hairline on a shaved or bald head
Add the appearance of density to thinning hair, in both men and women
Camouflage scars from a previous hair transplant, FUE or FUT
Restore the look of a full head of hair to help disguise alopecia
Although results are visible from the first session, with little downtime, a completed look is achieved usually within 8 weeks.
Does It Suit You? Almost Certainly
SMP is suitable for anyone. (As long as there are no contra indications) The shades are mixed to each individuals hair and skin colour. This is because once hair is shaved to the follicle it reads as a grey shade. If you go grey later, the shades naturally fades with your hair colour. For women, Kelly mixes the correct shades to blend with your natural hair colour and skin tone, without any shaving required, she places the sap dots in-between existing hair follicles to give the look of considerably thicker hair. For men, the process is the same for a hair density treatment or the dots can be placed over bare scalp to give the look of a buzz cut.
SMP or a Regenerative Treatment? An Honest Answer
SMP does not help hair regrow. It only creates the appearance of density.
SMP can be successfully combined with hair growth treatments to give a much fuller look.
SMP treatment can help add the finishing touches after a hair transplant. Should you require more density but not have enough donor hairs, SMP is a great way post transplant to add the look of density once the hair has grown back.
SMP is also a good way to cover any scarring over the scalp, whether from an injury or surgery, such as an FUT scar or FUE if pitting is visible.
SMP can be used after a course of PRP, Mesotherapy or Polynucleotides for example, again to add the look of greater density or to add a little extra finishing touch to any areas of hair loss that were struggling more than others to complete a fuller look.
Depending what you want to achieve, we have options to help regrow your own hair, where follicles are still visible, or camouflage hair loss or bare scalp.
Many clients chose a combined treatment approach: a regenerative course to make the most of their existing hair, with SMP layered on top for the look of extra fullness. If you are not sure which treatment is appropriate, book a consultation with Kelly to discuss all options.
What the Process Looks Like
SMP is built up or layered gradually over three sessions for a natural professional result. Rushing the process is how you get an unnatural result.
Session 1 — the foundation is laid.
Session 2 — around two weeks later, we add density and adjusting the tone and shades if needed.
Session 3 — around 2 – 3 weeks approx after the 2nd session, the final refinements and tweaks.
Each session runs anywhere from one to four hours, depending on the area size we are covering. Before the session, Kelly draws the hairline on (if required) and works through it with you, so you decide exactly how soft and natural or how sharp and defined it should be. The hair line is genuinely personal choice so Kelly works with you to ensure you are happy before going ahead
Although the final result takes 3 sessions over several weeks, you will see an instant effect on the first session.
After each session the area looks a little red for about 12 – 24 hours, and most people are back at work the same day for shorter sessions or the next day for longer sessions. We ask that you follow the aftercare advice given pre and post treatment sessions. This includes; avoiding washing the hair or scalp for 4 days approx. and avoiding heavy sweating, heavy workouts, swimming, sauna, after each sessions for 72 hours. Full pre and post care advice is given during initial consultation, and both in writing and verbally after each session.
Are results guaranteed?
Everyone is unique therefore the treatment itself and longevity of results are affected by health, medication, lifestyle, and aftercare, we cannot guarantee how long your result will last, although most people have the result they want within 3 sessions and results last approximately 5- 7 years. Some may need 4 sessions, or need a top up after 18 months to 2 years, due to contributing factors such as medication or sun exposure for example.
Kelly ensures all this is discussed during a full consultation and will see to it that you are made aware of any factors that may affect your treatment. Should any extra sessions or a top up be needed, this will be explained and discussed in full and treatment timelines and prices will be adjusted accordingly. At The Hair Office we pride ourselves on good customer service.
How Long It Lasts
SMP lasts approximately 5 – 7 years on average. Some results last longer, up to 8 or 9 years, others as little as 2 – 3. As we age and the hair may start growing grey, the ink will fade with the natural ageing process. Should you not go grey and wish to bring the colour and intensity back to how it started, we can provide a refresh session. If ageing and sun exposure and other lifestyle factors have faded the ink sooner, maybe a top up session or two is needed. These are not full courses of treatments again and usually don’t take as long and therefore time and price reflect this.
We treat SMP the same as any other hair treatment, as unique as your are, each hair loss journey is different and therefore so are the treatment plans. You are supported no matter what your choice.
Why the Practitioner Matters More Than the Clinic
Good SMP takes experience, precision and time. Be cautious of choosing purely on price or promises that the entire treatment can be completed in a single session. The best results are built gradually, with careful attention to pigment, shade, density, hairline design and how the scalp heals between sessions.
We carry each treatment including SMP in a sterile and clinical setting.Kelly Morrell qualified as an aesthetic therapist in 1994 and has worked in hair loss since 2014. She has industry awards and a 2024 Finalist nomination for Hair Restoration Practitioner of the Year. Kelly has been practicing SMP since 2018, so many years of experience in this area. She treats every hairline as an unique design.
The art of the hair line is discussed in a calm and unhurried setting where you can talk honestly about your hair loss and the look you want to achieve. Working at The Hair Office also means she has Dr Anju Mehta and the clinic’s full diagnostic and regenerative range alongside her, so if SMP turns out to be one part of a bigger plan, it is all handled under one roof.

Fantastic I had a consultation at the hair office with Dr Mehta and Kelly Morrell. The atmosphere was really relaxed they put my mind at rest about the treatment which was only mildly uncomfortable and relatively pain free . The treatment administered by Kelly took approximately twenty minutes. The results exceeded my expectations, within 6 weeks I could see changes in my hair which has continued to improve after my second treatment . I wholeheartedly recommend them.
